Top Ten Hiking Tips
Start with the right gear and emergency supplies.
Carry a printed copy of the map, trail descriptions (if available) and a compass. A hiking app, such as All Trails can be a great addition to your map and compass.
Tell someone where you plan to go, the route you plan to take and the time you plan to be back. This will save valuable time and maybe your life if things don’t go as planned.
Avoid hiking alone, especially if you are a new or inexperienced hiker. Groups like the Mazamas offer lots of Oregon hikes for a nominal fee.
Take tons of pictures. Your adventure is going to be epic!
Bring more water and more food than you think you’re going to need.
Check weather conditions before heading out. Prepare for and be flexible in unexpected weather conditions.
Spoil - and if need be, bribe - your kids with plenty of treats to keep them motivated on the trail.
Make sure the trail you plan to hike is a good match for your fitness ability and experience as a hiker.
Leave no trace. Keep this awesome experience just as amazing for the next person.
As always, be sure to check local resources for weather, road conditions and COVID-19 related closures when planning your trip. And don’t forget to post your photos to #lifelivedoregonstyle on Instagram. We’ll see you out there!
